The Strand Club
The Strand Club was founded by Margaret Payne and on 10th January 1996 was officially inaugurated. One or two local members of the WI had become aware that there was a need for a more informal, very local club, held in an afternoon so that it was no longer necessary to turn out in all weathers in the dark.
The club began in a very small way, and over the years the membership has grown and diversified. It is still however a small friendly club for local women and every month we meet in the Overstrand methodist church and listen to speakers, or consume a social strawberry tea, or hold a bring and buy sale.
The speakers vary enormously, as a look at this year's programme will confirm; anyone from the House Manager at Blickling to a representative from Age Concern. As a great many of our members are retired, this last will be of great interest.
We also now have funds to take an annual outing - nowhere too far away. This year we shall take a 'behind-the-scenes' look at Thursford which should be fascinating.
Every January we post our programme for the forthcoming year on one of the village noticeboards and welcome any visitors who would like to try us out. This year's programme is shown below.
Membership
We currently have just over 30 members.
We always try to keep our annual subscription down to the minimum amount possible and feel the present figure of £7.50 represents real value for these days.
Our members pay a further £1 per meeting (£1.50 for guests) which covers the cost of tea, biscuits and a raffle ticket.
Meetings
We meet every second Wednesday each month at 2:30pm in the Methodist Church, Cliff Road, Overstrand.
