"Grade 11 Listed Building"

A rare road sign at the end of Coast Road has become the latest "Grade 11 Listed Building" in Norfolk. It is a prohibition disc dating between 1904 and 1919 with early decorative features including a post cap and banded treatment of the cast iron column. The red disc meant that no motor vehicles were allowed past the sign, similar to the "No entry" signs of today. The first traffic signs were introduced in the mid 19th century by the "Bicycle Union" but it was not until 1904 that local authrities were allowed to erect their own signs. In 1919 the establishment of the Ministry of Transport let to increasing standardisation and, over the years, the gradual removal of any earlier signs. David Gurney, Historic Environment Manager at Norfolk County Council is delighted with the latest addition to the list. "This is a very rare survival of a sign in its original location. It is an important part of Norfolk's early roadside heritage, alongside other features such as milestones, finger posts and post boxes, all of which we are very keen to record" he said. "Features like this contribute to local character and sense of place, and should be preseved and protected".
