Overstrand Gardening Club
For once the weather forecast was correct! On the day of the Club's summer outing rain was forecast from 10 am to 5 pm, just the timing of the outing. Over 40 people left Overstrand in good spirits to visit Gooderstone Water Gardens near Swaffham but, as they arrived there, the rain began - it was certainly a water garden. Nonetheless people enjoyed wandering round the 8 acre site with its many water features and native shrubs. Owner Coral Hoyes was on hand to explain how the gardens had been set up and her plans for the future. After a picnic lunch and, for many, delicious home-made cakes, it was then a short trip to the second stop of the day, Castle Acre Priory. The rain continued but there was a good exhibition about the medieval society at Castle Acre and items found on the site to look at for those who did not wish to walk round the Priory ruins. The Priory was home to a community of monks until 1537 when Henry VIII disbanded all monastic houses. The patchwork Herb garden was of special interest. After the opportunity of trying out traditional games in the Large Barn and a cup of tea, the coach left for home with clearing skies.
In spite of the weather it had been an enjoyable and interesting day.
The next meeting is on July 6th when member Greg Bond will speak on 'Wildlife in the Garden'.
Tickets for the August BBQ at Groveland Farm on 3rd August will be available, members £11, guests £12.
